Thinking in Context

The importance of systems thinking in decision-making and organizational performance.

By: Alejandro Martínez Gómez

Why does seeing the whole system change the quality of decisions?

One of the most frequent mistakes in strategic decision-making is analyzing problems in isolation.

  • A result is interpreted without context.

  • A symptom is taken as a cause.

  • A decision is evaluated without understanding the system in which it occurs.

In complex environments—and especially in family businesses—this way of thinking often leads to piecemeal interventions that don't solve the underlying problem.

Because organizational problems are rarely linear.

They are connected to multiple factors:

  • human dynamics

  • organizational structure

  • accumulated history

  • power relations

When these dimensions are not considered together, decisions tend to oversimplify reality.

And all premature simplification generates distortion.

Thinking in context involves something more demanding:

Stopping the need for a quick solution and broadening our perspective to understand the whole system or all the systems involved.

This way of thinking, known as systems thinking, doesn't always produce immediate answers.

But it does produce something more valuable:

Decisions that make sense within the reality in which they must operate.

Beacuse strategic intelligence isn't about finding quick fixes.

It's about seeing things deeply enough so that the solutions are truly effective.

how to perceive, understand, and act in complex environments.

Every process begins with a conversation.
